I’m in the mood for summer but as the title says we are still on the look out for our old pal Sun… But it’s Scotland and we’ve got used to having a good time without him. I’m going to give you a little insight into what tunes get me in the mood for the shortest season in the Scottish calendar. Some tunes are old, some new, some dance, some pop. You lads know the score, it’s all good tunes!

My Seven Choices

At the top of my list is a bit liquid DnB from Matrix & Futurebound. This tune has some top lyrics and is full of energy. Cannae beat it!

My second choice is a remix of a new song by Keane. “Silenced By The Night” is a new single from the recently released “Strangeland” album. I’ma big Keane fan myself so this one was close to top of the list. Alesso’s remix is outstanding!

Coming third is a new tune out this month from Dada Life. “Rolling Stones T-Shirt” is a brilliant tune that just shouts out summer! If you look closely the video has some pretty ladies in it

Just missing out on a medal is the Alvaro remix of “Plage” by Crystal Fighters. Amazing tune and the original is on par with this if you are less into the dancy stuff. I’m still looking for someone to go to the plage with me I’m skint so it might be a trip round Linlithgow Loch instead

The “Famous Five” spot goes to a great wee tune by Miami Horror. It’s an older tune but hits the “summer” nail on the head. Love it

Sixth spot is taken by Lana Del Rey. The Joy Orbison remix of her hit single “Video Games” is a quality chilled out track. The original was great but this takes it to another level. I’ve had this tune on in the car and it’s great to drive to. Woohoo! Roadtrip time!

Completing the list is the tune that’s going to be pumping in any club you go to during your holidays. Alesso & Sebastian Ingrosso’s tune “Calling” presses all the right buttons. Shove yer “levels” up yer arse!

Hellooooo (Mrs. Doubtfire voice) and welcome back to another Epoch monthly digest! Ignoring the constant Scottish downpour, it’s been quite a month for tunes with a lot of producers starting to reveal their big summer weapons. First of all, you may be saying: “April? Whit? It’s May, that sh*t cray” but let me assure you, the tunes I was waiting for, I couldn’t have waited another 4 weeks to gush about. So without further ado, on with the show…

Wolfgang Gartner – Redline (Original Mix)

April seems to be a time for experimentation and electro titans like Porter Robinson and Wolfgang Gartner have been dipping their toes into the progressive house / IKEA house pool. Porter’s ‘Language’ is a huge, emotional windswept tear jerker of a tune which is even getting Radio 1 airplay, ‘mon the wee man! That said, I’ve chosen not to feature it as my Gartner sensibilities have this track beating it on all fronts. ‘Redline’ is a great big Swedish/prog/electro/house tune with a hook perfectly suited to looking lovingly into the eyes of your bbz on those warm summer nights. Of course there’s been your usual bout of “OMG BRAH WOLFGANG SOLD OUT BRAH” but we’re all a bit more mature than that here at ZeroSeven ; )

Charles Delxue – Funkee Crunch (Original Mix) FREE DOWNLOAD

Wow, this next track is delicious. Delicious enough that I actually wish Funkee Crunch was a breakfast cereal. Charles Deluxe is a Buenos Aires native with a throng of quality remixes and originals under his belt and his latest is a funky, filthy, electro house stomper. Not a dry seat in the house, pour me another bowl.

Punks Jump Up feat. Dave 1 – Mr. Overtime (Oliver Remix)

Before I’d even hit play on this beauty, I knew I was in for something special. The combination of Oliver and Dave 1 (vocalist of Chromeo) is about as perfect as combinations get in my eyes and this track does not disappoint. What do you even say about Oliver? Their production style is absolutely perfect and they work a mix like sonic magicians. Everything about this tune ticks my boxes. The vocals, unf. The synths, unf. The melodic and harmonic movement, unf. My track of the month and remix of the year so far. Disco synth bliss delivered from the new masters of their genre featuring Dave 1 absolutely nailing it to the wall. Perfect.

Mary Epworth – Long Gone (GRUM Remix)

Leading on nicely from the previous track is the second new remix of the month from fellow Scot Grum, a remix of Mary Epworth’s ‘Long Gone’. In some internet circles, there’s been talk of Oliver having ascended the ‘big 80′s tunes’ throne in Grum’s absence. Thus, people have been awaiting the Grum comeback with baited breath, hoping for a continuation of that epic 80′s sound Grum is so well known for. We all love a surprise though! Anyone that keeps an eye on Grum’s Twitter feed will know that he’s recently rediscovered his penchant for the 90′s sound and this remix seems to be a part culmination of that. The track itself, is a lovely piece of retro euphoria with a great deep throbbing bassline and sparkling synth and organ lines. The soaring vocals are evocative of a time gone by which place the track somewhere between the Airscape remix of Sarah McLachlan’s ‘Silence’ and Haddaway’s ‘What is Love?”. The sheer genius of Grum though is that this never sounds like a stock, throwback pastiche. It sounds fresh, it sounds modern, it’s great. With a new album out in the coming months, it looks like Grum could be set to do for the 90s sound, what he did for the 80s sound and that excites me and it should excite you, so very much. Choose Grum.

Steve Aoki & Angger Dimas feat. Iggy Azalea – Beat Down

If like me, you are more pro Azalea than Azealia then this one’s for you! 110bpm ragers will forever be my jam and with the addition of Iggy we have some proper facebusting music right here. Moombah beatdown. Ridiculous melodic kid’s TV hook and the gorgeous Ms Azalea laying down the law. Pump yo’ feeeests!

So there we have it! In my humble opinion, the best April and early May have to offer. Honorable mentions for this month go to Porter Robinson’s ‘Language’ and Dada Life’s ‘Rolling Stones T-Shirt’ but then again you could write an entire website about how good Dada Life are! See y’all next month folks when I’ll not only have another monthly roundup but maybe even a wee mixset or two!

Summer. Is. Coming.

Epoch x

Featuring in the soundtrack to Irvine Welsh’s latest smash hit movie ‘Ecstasy’, Tiësto & Mark Knight feat Dino ‘Beautiful World’ combines the outstanding talents of 2 of dance music’s most influential artists with the vocals of Dino Lenny, creating a colossal crossover hit.

The original beauty of a track is one of our summer anthems here at ZeroSeven. (Summer anthems are a big thing for us!) A track you want to listen to while sitting outside sipping a nice cold alcoholic beverage while the smells of BBQ waft up your nostrils. It’s one of those feel good anthems that you’ll listen to again.

Just as the movie is set to take the Box Office by storm, this ‘Beautiful World’ package, complete with a mouth watering set of remixes from Laidback Luke, Michael Woods, Torqux, Tom Staar & Sam Young and Violet Oversoul will be taking over the unsuspecting dancefloors this summer.

True to his trademark filthy house style, Laidback Luke delivers a pounding mix that will shake even the most hardened speakers to the core. Fresh from achieving a UK Chart Number 1 alongside Example, Michael Woods turns in a euphoric remix with a thunderous groove. Dubstep wonder kid Torqux cranks up the bass for a full on twisted & dark affair, whilst Tom Staar & Sam Young produce a rocking re-edit and Violet Oversoul completes the package on a chill out tip.

Have a listen to the Laidback Luke remix, tell us what you think below and get downloading!

And from what we’ve heard of the movie too. It’s definitely one to see! It’s out now.

If you don’t know who Avicii is you’ve clearly been spending too much time in your cave! This young Swedish DJ/producer is the new superstar on the House scene, an icon taken by the media as the perfect example of the new producers’ wave taking place since 2009. Taken as an example because he released his worldwide hit ‘Levels‘ that we could hear months before its release, because of the DJs impatience, who couldn’t resist to the tune and also because some ripped versions got uploaded on the web almost 1 year before its release.

You won’t be surprised if we were to tell you that it’s almost the same case for the Swedish newest track called ‘Silhouettes‘, which appeared at the same time as ‘Levels‘ on the web. Like for his best-selling tune, there have been so many rip versions moving along on Internet, changing every time Avicii made one little improvement to the tune. That’s how many people have been able to hear almost 5 versions with different vocals, the thing which changed the most between the first rip and the official preview, given by Avicii on his own YouTube channel.

‘Silhouettes‘ is definitely the ideal following for the Swedishman to the huge success he got from ‘Levels‘, he could deliver us the next number one of the main charts on the biggest musical stores. Since the release of his first hit – which has become a real classic for every DJ – ‘Bromance‘, everything looks to come bigger and bigger for Avicii these last years; he recently appeared on the main stage at the UMF with one of the biggest popstar in History – Madonna – who came to give him her support for the remix he made for her. (She did look a bit of a twat just standing around the stage though)

Now have a look to this video clip – previewing ‘Silhouettes‘ before its release which could bevery soon through his label LE7ELS, like for ‘Fade Into Darkness‘.

Ryan Wallace is a name that is quickly making its way across the Scottish clubbing scene In the last few months. He is 23 years old and has only been Djing since December 2010. Ryan is already Holding his own club night Sample which is Edinburgh’s fastest growing big club night not to be missed. Ryan’s unique raw passion for Electronic dance music, mixing, cutting and scratching skills really make him stand out from the rest. He also likes to get a bit crazy behind the decks always getting the crowd right behind him making him a must see Dj in 2012.

We had a little chat with Ryan and also asked him to make us a mix. He agreed. This made us smile.

First of all, Before we kick off what drink are you having?
Right this second? Nothing, I’ve just had Scrambled egg on toast though. Lovely.

Right, lets just get straight into it… What tunes are doing it for you just now?
I’ve kind of stepped away from the Electro and Dutch House that I have been playing in the past and now really big on my Progressive House, House, Tech House and even been spinning a few techno tracks. There is a lot of really good stuff out there now.

Were you influenced by any old records & tapes? Which ones?
Yes I was actually, I couldn’ t tell you the names but I remember listing to my uncles old Techno tapes as young as 7 years old I loved it. Even at school while the other kids listened to The Backstreet Boys and The Spice Girls I was listening to Paul Van Dyk and Tiesto when trance was proper trance.

Who are your favorite Producers/DJ’s?
There are so many good tracks getting produced these days, its excellent, but for me it has to be Nicky Romero or Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano there stuff is so nice. You definitely need to check out.

Did you parents bring you up with Music, how did you find yourself getting into it?
I’ve always loved music, not really from my parents though, its just been something I’ve always respected and love the way certain tunes can make you feel.

You’ve ran a few club nights, tell us a bit more about them.
Yeah, well I started a night called Sample at the Bongo club last year which was ok, it had real potential so moved it to the Lane and tried it there for a few months but it wasn’t getting the exposure or chance it deserved and was costing so much money it wasn’t worth it in the end because the real reason I was doing it was so I could DJ as I was new to the scene and wanted to play in a club and that was the best way to do it at the time.

If you could change anything from the nights what would you do?
Good question, I don’t regret doing the nights because it has helped me get to where I am right now but I would have put a lot more time and money into promotion but that is easier said than done when your always skint.

You also had a night at one of Edinburgh’s biggest clubs, Lava Ignite or Cav as we like to call it. We we’re there to take photographs for this night too, what happened on that night, tell us all about it.
Well, once again, this had so much potential, we put in so much time and effort it was sickening when the door staff turned away more than half the punters that came. Don’t know why, so not making statements but we got proper fucked over.

Have you any nights coming up planned? Anyhing planned for the future.
I am currently running a nice we underground House and Techno night called C.R.A.F.T for cant remember a fuckin thing? which is invite only and for people who hate cheese and like the old school friendly fun atmosphere and I want to keep it that way. Also having a 1 off Boat party on the 9th of June which will have a very good guest but cant say right now and that will be £20 a ticket for 5 hours of madness on the Forth Belle

What tips can you give to people that want to run there own night. For example us here at ZeroSeven, we’re looking to get ourself in the club scene!
Tough one, I’d say either DON’T lol or make sure you plan everything, put as much time and effort in to everything you can. Do people favours as they might be able to return them someday which comes in handy. Get good Dj’s but mind you, from a promotion side of things better off getting somebody in who can sell the most tickets for you.

You’ve recently been creating you’re own tunes, how did you get into this and how did you learn?
It seems to be the way forward these days. You don’t get booked on talent or skill these days, so if you have your own tracks and you can produce then the gigs should come. That’s the theory anyway. Look at Avicii, Romero, Afrojack, all amazing producers and get gigs cause of it, not their DJ skills so I am trying follow suit.

How long does it take you to create a track?
It varies. I made ‘Bang Tidy’ in a day but then 2012 took me and Tommy Mulligan – who is probably 1 of the most underated DJ’s/Producers in Scotland never mind Edinburgh, he is amazing got to check him out – ages and ages. My track Scrub took just about a week. It depends how things start flowing or if you can make/find the sound you are looking for from the start or not.

Do you have any tips for people who would like to start producing their own music?
Keep at it, dont give up because there is a lot to learn. YouTube is good, I have watched almost every Ableton video on that ha.

Right, so let’s hear some news on questions we, here at ZeroSeven Edinburgh occasionally get asked.

Drugs in the Dance Music Community. What’s your views on it?
Haha! Well I’d be lying if i said the best nights I have had clubbing were not on something that makes you feel like your on top of the world, however it needs to be at the right place and right time, not in some average club, chewing your face off to Justin Bieber remixes. That’s not cool.

What do you think about the current Edinburgh club scene?
What scene? It is dead. I hate it. Full of cheese and no offence students who wouldn’t know a good house track if it slapped them in the face. Makes me feel like giving up just because of it but I know there are places which as a great scene like Glasgow for a start so I’ll keep plugging along.

Tell us about 2 Twisted…

2 Twisted is the name me and my best mate Darren Macdonald (Dazzimac) play under. Together we flow so much better together behind the decks than we do on our own, we kind of play off each other and you can see that when we play together. You can also do alot more with four hands than you can with 2 with effects etc its so much fun.

What’s next for 2 Twisted?
Big things we are both so mad about about DJ’ing, clubbing and producing. We wont stop ’til we are playing all over the world. Nothing will stop us. Watch and see.

What’s there to say about Madeon that hasn’t already been said. The 17 year old French prodigy pulled yet another rabbit out of his hat with his fresh, new remix of Martin Solveig’s – The Night Out. Look for The Night Out (Madeon Remix) to be blowing up interweb charts everywhere in the very near future!

Hollaaaaaaaaa! I hope everyone has been taking full advantage of the four day Scottish summer we’ve been having. I know for me it was an instant taps aff (tops off, for you non-scots) situation. You won’t be surprised to learn that all that taps aff action has required a soundtrack. So as per, I’ve been raiding the blogs all month and here are the tracks that I’ve been figuratively spinning the most.

I love Chromeo. Anyone that’s ever fancied anyone loves Chromeo. I also love ripping electro… A match made in heaven right here then. Shreddie Mercury rips us a new one, in a way reminiscent of early Zedd (more on him to follow). Glorious.

Chromeo – Night By Night (Shreddie Mercury Remix)

Solid gold once again from The Noisy Freaks, currently in my holy trinity of producers along with F.O.O.L and Dead C∆T Bounce. Yeehaw!

NERVO ft. Steve Aoki & Afrojack – We’re All No One (The Noisy Freaks Remix)

Wolfgang Gartner is undoubtedly my favourite producer and these next tracks just go to show that class has longevity. In a scene where people will often play something for two months, then never again, (except Levels – DEH NEH NEH NEH NEH NEH. DEH NEH NEH NEH NEH NEH NEH NEH) it’s good to see that folk are STILL remixing Gartner classics. Here are two such classics which have appeared this month. PrototypeRaptor rocketing up the ‘OMG <3′ charts at breakneck speed.

Wolfgang Gartner – Space Junk – Frederik Mooij’s Bootleg

Wolfgang Gartner – Push and Rise (PrototypeRaptor Bootleg Remix)

Last and the furthest thing from least ever, Beatport chart topper Zedd is back with his new single Shotgun and dear God it’s beautiful. This is awesome in the same way Original Don is awesome, in the same way that Scooter is awesome, in the same way that every piece of music ever that’s made you want to jump is awesome. Solar Phoenix and I had the pleasure of seeing Zedd twice at Holy Ship! and he delivered in a meteoric way. Zedd may well be the future.

Zedd – Shotgun (Original Mix)

Right, that’s it for now. Get these on and get dancing while there’s still sun to be enjoyed! I’ll be back next month with more awesome shit and maybe a new mix or two.

The brand new official video for Jakwob‘s smash single “Electrify” is pretty on point. This future jungle dubstep banger is definitely one for the big room.

Jakwob’s “Electrify” has turned up some pretty tasty remixes, but below is my favourite of the bunch – the liquid-infused drum and bass rework, courtesy of Etherwood.

It’s not hard to see why this track has churned out so many exceptional interpretations – that infectious melody and Jetta’s vocal from the original have been layered brilliant here on top of a energetic and relentless drum beat that pales away to reveal a euphoric orchestral section. Brilliantly produced, and a worthy addition to the remix package which you can grab by from iTunes.

I also highly recommend that you get your hands on Etherwoods EP for free if you like the sounds above. It’s definately something you need to own. Click here to download it completely free!
