Zero Seven Awards 2009

Published on December th, 2009

Welcome to the first annual zero seven awards where we will announce our song of the year, album of the year, website of the year and whatever else we can thing of to award. So sit back with a cup of tea and a few chocolate biscuits and enjoy.

The single of the year was very tough to choose from. It’s been a great year for music from all genres. We narrowed our selection of around 25 top tracks to 3 with La Roux – In For The Kill (Skream Remix), Calvin Harris – I’m Not Alone and Dizzee Rascal – Bonkers. La Roux’s remix by Skream made the top 3 with its minimalistic sound and huge build up but that absolutely epic drop. Calvin Harris made it into the top three for having the most dance worthy sound. We love when those synths appear in the track. Epic stuff. And we also have Dizzee Rascal with Bonkers, what an absolute tune it is getting everyone onto the dancefloor and opening the door for grime into mainstream again.

There was only one single that can win however and it was Calvin Harris – I’m Not Alone. When we first heard this tune on Pete Tongs show on Radio One the search was on to find it over the internet straight away. The lad has done Scotland proud!

Another tough on here. Lots of albums to my taste. We’ve got Calvin Harris again and also Dizzee Rascal albums but going a bit deeper we also got the Sub Focus album. And also the new album from David Guetta. Calvin and Dizzee both started their albums with complete tunes! I’m not alone for Calvin and Bonkers from Dizzee. There is not one tune on Calvins album that I do not like and that’s why it’s featured here. However Dizzee rascal has a few on it that isn’t really my taste but I know if your a fan of that specific genre then that will be a huge album for you. Sub Focus’ album hit the shelves on October 12th this year and is another album that I could listen to all the way through without skipping a track. Although its certainly not everyone’s cup of tea.  And finally the HUGE album from David Guetta featuring a range of artists. Kid Cudi, Estelle, Akon and Kelly Rowland all feature on the great album from Guetta.

There could, however, only be one winner. Sub Focus picks up this award for the Album of the Year. Nick Douwma (Sub Focus) released his first album this year and it went down well with all dj’s on Radio One and other stations. This is a piece of work to be proud of for your first album.

2009 is the year of Twitter. The social networking website is popular for stalking your favourite celebrities and friends and of course we’re on it! But it’s too big to win website of the year. We can only give this award to a website, however, where the people that run the website do the hard work. We thought it would be wrong if we give ourselves the award… so we have to give it to someone else. The three that were in the running for the website of the year award is Behance.net, which gave me lots of help this year and also lots of  inspiration for designs. Also, Hypem.com where I get lots of unheard tracks and TVCatchup.com which is a superb website for watching live TV.

The winner was TVCatchup which lets your stream live TV onto your PC. It’s a superb service and is full of channels with a wide range of stuff on. My particular favourite channel is flaunt which you cannot watch anywhere else apart from sky, I think. So congratulations to the TVCatchup team.

This is the one where we tell you the artist to watch for next year. Lots of people are going for The XX to be the big hitters of 2010 but we’re not going down the same track as them. Keep an eye out for Plan B. He has features on a few Chase & Status songs and starred in the recent film Harry Brown. Keep an eye on this lad and enjoy his new track below.

That’s it for this year but come back next year, if this website is still alive and running due to the financial climate. It’s been great having you on board for 2009 and lets make 2010 better!
